The museum gets its name from the Swiss railway system, which was originally called the “Zurich-Waldhorn Railway.” In 1832 the railway was extended to include sections of tunnel system.

As a young man, in 1870 there were some very serious railway accidents in the region, including one where a train was stopped at a bridge. The station was evacuated, but the disaster was so severe that the train was never repaired. The museum has one of the most impressive and complete collections of Swiss railway equipment, with old locomotives, cars, trains, signals, and other things from throughout the whole of the country.

It’s a bit hard to tell if this is a new building or an old one. The former is used for some of the most important infrastructure projects in the country, and the latter is where we have the most problems. The new section at the bottom of the bridge, near the old station, and the old part of the tunnel system are a little bit more interesting than the first two.
